For centuries, many have questioned "what is good design?"    Some may argue that good design is tied to beauty or an "aesthetically pleasing solution," but then isn't beauty in the eyes of the beholder?  This viewpoint only relates to the "veneer" of the design when design is not just skin deep.  Design permeates every aspect of one's home.  Good design does not have to be complicated and in fact some of the most successful designs are very simple.  Design is about solving problems and creating solutions.   A beautiful room decorated with finishes and furnishings that are not sympathetic to a homeowner's children or pets is a bad design.  A kitchen layed out where a cook is required to take many steps, sometimes around islands, moving from sink, to refrigerator to range, is a bad design.   “Good design comes from a thoughtful, deliberate solution that carefully balances aesthetics with function.  It is a space that is carefully designed to support one's lifestyle, then decorated with materials and furnishings for that lifestyle.   Unfortunately, the final evaluation of a design's success is usually after a space has been occupied and has been used to the fullest.  By this time, all decisions have been made and it is too late to make changes.  This is why a good, strong design concept is needed for every design, that clearly delineates the homeowners needs,  and the designer's solutions before the hammers hit the nails.  Decorating with Collectibles Adds Meaning and Interest         Residential design and life-style periodicals savor a good and unusual private collection. Collections bring so much meaning to a decorative solution and help to "tell a client's story" if incorporated properly. Seeing multiples of an object that may be from different time periods, different places and created by different sources is exciting! Collections speak to the care, attention, eagle-eye and patience of the collector. Collections typically take time and patience, because they are not usually found in one place, at the same time.
